A midnight phone call, a passionate kiss in an empty cinema, and a love at first sight that changed Linda Thompson’s life forever.
1. The Phone Call On August 16, 1977
Linda Thompson’s story begins with a heartbreaking tragedy. On August 16, 1977, a frantic phone call from a devastated Lisa Marie—Elvis Presley’s only daughter—delivered the shocking news that Elvis had passed away.
Although she had broken up with Elvis just the previous December, Linda suppressed her own grief and did her absolute best to comfort the young Lisa Marie. Yet, as the initial shock began to fade, a crucial question crossed her mind:
“What does he want me to wear to the funeral?”
It might have seemed like a shallow question at first glance. However, for those who knew how meticulously Elvis managed and curated every detail of Linda’s appearance during their years together, it was a completely natural reaction.
2. From Graceland’s Gates To A Kiss At The Memphian
Born and raised in Memphis, Linda Thompson had been an ardent fan of Elvis since childhood. She used to watch all his movies at the Strand Theatre, knew every single lyric by heart, and even made pilgrimages to the gates of Graceland just to catch a glimpse or get an autograph from the “King of Rock and Roll.”
Destiny finally called her name on the night of July 6, 1972, when the 22-year-old Linda unexpectedly met Elvis Presley at the Memphian Theatre.

From the moment they met, the two were instantly and powerfully drawn to each other. They spent hours that night locked in a passionate embrace, kissing in the dim light of the theater. The very next day, Elvis invited her to Graceland to meet his father before she had to leave town for a planned family vacation.
3. A Fierce Outpouring Of Love After The Vacation
When Linda finally returned to Memphis, she discovered that Elvis had been desperately searching for her the entire time she was away. Upon their reunion, he directly confronted her with words that were fierce, demanding, and deeply filled with love:
“Honey, you told me you were going on vacation. You didn’t tell me you were going to fall off the face of the earth for two weeks. I have been out of my mind trying to get ahold of you. Who do you think I am? Who do you think I am? What do you think I mean when I say I want to be with you? I meant every word I said! I want to be with you.”
4. The 24/7 Life Of Two Soulmates
Following those fateful moments, Linda and Elvis rapidly became inseparable soulmates. Linda recalled, “Those early days with Elvis were magical. He was so romantic, so tender, so attentive and loving.”
She willingly submerged her entire existence into his world: “From the very beginning, my life revolved around him and his schedule, and making him happy, and his laughter, became the greatest source of my own happiness.”
Astonishingly, during their first year together, they were by each other’s side 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only exceptions were the rare moments when Elvis would slip away to the Thunderbird Jewelry Store in Las Vegas to buy her gifts.
5. A Multi-Layered And Complete Bond
The bond between Elvis and Linda was profoundly deep, complex, and filled with shifting emotional dynamics. Since Elvis was nearly sixteen years older than Linda, their roles naturally adapted to what they needed most. When Linda sought protection, she would play the little girl to his father figure. More often than not, however, she became the motherly figure, nurturing and comforting a vulnerable Elvis whenever he felt weak.
At times they were passionate lovers, at times they felt like siblings, and at other times they were each other’s closest, most trusted best friends. All of these roles beautifully intertwined, creating an unbreakable connection that Linda beautifully summarized:
“Our relationship was very complete—when it was necessary, we could be everything to each other. We were all of those things to each other at one time or another. And Elvis was always, always, everything to me.”
